The pet is not aware since the brain has already shut down. We at Rider Veterinary Services want you to know that we support you. If you decide to say goodbye at your home, we hope you will allow us the honor of serving you and your loved one.
We try to be accommodating as possible, but please note we do not offer services 24/7. You can opt to bury your pet if local ordinances allow this. If you wish to choose this option, we will discuss proper burial methods for euthanized pets. Pets really enjoy being out doors, some in the car, others the couch or the kitchen floor. Wherever you feel your family and pet will be most happy. We also welcome appointments on Saturdays and Sundays so the whole family can be a part of this journey together.
Why Pet Hospice
We can work in the area of your home where you and your pet are most comfortable, whether it be on the living room floor, a family room couch, or even outside in good weather conditions . One of our veterinarians, along with an assistant, will travel to your home so you and your pet can remain together in a peaceful, comfortable, and private environment. All of your love and focus can be directed toward your furry family member during this emotional time. The entire appointment typically lasts minutes, which allows us to go forward at your pace without rushing through any part of the process.
Next, we'll perform a sedation assessment to ensure that your pet is sleeping deeply and doesn't respond to stimulation. Finally, we'll humanely euthanize them through a painless injection. We'll give you as much time as you need with your pet before we provide you with their death certificate and discuss how you'd like to handle their remains. Additionally, we can notify your primary veterinarian of your pet's passing to help keep their records updated and prevent you from having to make the emotional call. We have extensive experience helping cats, dogs and other animals find peace through euthanasia.
Veterinary hospice is not prolonging suffering, it's goal is to prevent suffering from occurring
When you are ready, our team will then transport your pet for cremation. Humane Euthanasia- when your family is ready & your pet is peacefully sleeping, our team will give the final euthanasia injection. This injection is usually given in a vein and works very rapidly. The veterinarian will use the stethoscope to confirm your pet has passed on. Let us partner with your family to keep your pet living its best days and to provide support when it is time to peacefully say goodbye. Our caring team wants you to be as comfortable as possible, and when you are relaxed it helps your pet to be relaxed.
If you are more comfortable in a veterinary clinic, then we recommend you go this route. Gentle Sedation- Your pet will receive an injection of sedative medication to allow them to remain calm, content & comfortable. This allows your pet to fall asleep in your presence typically within a few minutes. We understand how difficult it is to make end-of-life decisions and we want to help you feel comfortable with your decisions. That's why at Shifa Farm & House Call Veterinary Services, we're proud to provide compassionate in-home euthanasia for cats and dogs in Edmonton.
Pet Hospice & In-home Euthanasia Service
Pet euthanasia is achieved through an anesthetic overdose. The pet is first given a calming sedative in the form of an injection to the thigh muscle. It may sting briefly, so distracting them with a tasty treat is helpful.
This helps ensure they are insulated from the parent’s emotions , but still allow them to say their goodbyes after the passing, before the pet leaves the home. A courtesy notification to your family’s veterinarian of your pet’s passing for their records. Talking about death is a skill that takes empathy, openness, non-judgment, and compassion. And we consider it a privilege to have these tough conversations with people leading up to their pet's euthanasia at home.

We care for notifying your veterinarian so that you do not need to make that difficult call. As the sedative takes effect, usually within 5-15 minutes, you’ll notice your pet’s pain slip away as they continue to relax. You and your family can be right by their side the entire time. Feel free to hold them, talk to them, and touch them during the entire appointment. We like to take the time to get to know you and your pet a little. Our veterinarians will answer any questions you may have. The euthanasia process, however, can be short in duration.
